Persuasive Essay

Social media affects teens sleep schedule

Social media connects people all around the world. It is also proven to be one of the most addicting platforms. Examples such as Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. These are some of many social media platforms. Hugues Sampasa-Kanyinga, Hayley A Hamilton and Jean-Philippe Chaput published an article titled Use of social media is associated with short sleep duration in a dose–response manner in students aged 11 to 20 years. This study shows the relationship between social media and sleep duration. In this study the authors discuss the lack of sleep caused by social media. In the article it states ‘’Greater use of social media was associated with shorter sleep duration in a dose–response fashion among the students.’’ This shows the more time teens spend on social media the less time they have to sleep. Sleep helps power the body and brain. Since adolescent bodies and minds are increasing rapidly, teenagers need more sleep to gain the benefits of sleep. The authors Isabella Wolniczak,José Alonso Cáceres-DelAguila ,Gabriela Palma-Ardiles,Karen J. Arroyo,Rodrigo Solís-Visscher,Stephania Paredes-Yauri,Karina Mego-Aquije and Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz also published an article titled Association between Facebook Dependence and Poor Sleep Quality: A Study in a Sample of Undergraduate Students in Peru. In the article, analyzing social media networks could build attachment with many negative effects in people's life. These networks have grown very quickly with an increased effect on young people. In the article it states ‘’ Facebook dependent participant had about 1.3 times greater prevalence of poor sleep quality than the non-dependent group, after controlling for age, sex and years in the faculty. As a result, the poor sleep quality prevalence of 53.7% among students not classified as Facebook dependent increases to 69.4% among those classified as Facebook dependent... ’’. This shows the negative relationship between sleep quantity and the increased social media use. Due to late night logins, sleep cycles are usually disturbed, which causes the user to lose sleep. The amount of sleep gained can determine a person's mood that day and also the quantity of motivation.Social media affects the amount of hours a user acquires, which determines their sleep duration.
Social media causes lack of sleep on young teenagers which negatively impacts their mental health. Social media is known to be very addictive and is used constantly for different reasons. These platforms are known to waste time throughout the day. Teens are so addicted to their phones and are always on social media to get new updates. Social media apps can be used for hours and one may not even notice the time flying by. The use of social media can cause teens to gain less sleep. Sleep is one of the most important aspects to repairing the body and the development of the brain. The more time we use our phone screens the less time we have to sleep. On average a person should sleep about 7-8 hours at minimum. Sleep can also determine an individual mood the next day. Sleep plays one of the most important roles in a person's physical health. Teens need to be more aware of the importance of sleep and the negative side effects of using social media too much.
I agree with the authors because I can use myself as an example. I often lose sleep because I always check social media for new updates or important information before I sleep and as soon as I wake up. ‘’Facebook has several advantages, based on the free access, facilitating communication as well as sharing personal information. However, the excessive use of this kind of social networks might cause several consequences including misuse, dependence and addiction’’(Isabella Wolniczak,José Alonso Cáceres-DelAguila ,Gabriela Palma-Ardiles,Karen J. Arroyo,Rodrigo Solís-Visscher,Stephania Paredes-Yauri,Karina Mego-Aquije,Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz.). Not only is social media used to gain more information. It allows for people all around the world to connect with each other. Social media allows us to communicate with anyone that also has the same social media platform. Social media is addictive because there is no end, there is always more to what I can find and look at, that is interesting and is a waste of time. I always want to be involved and know the trends and know the new gossip. I want to know what’s happening to these important figures on social media. Which are called influencers, they play a huge role in teens' lives because of the platform they have. The celebrities that have fame and power control social media users. Everyone wants to go on social media to grow their platform. Wanting to know everything is a problem. This takes away sleep because I am so interested in what is going to happen next, I don't want to miss anything so I stay awake instead of sleeping and getting the hours I need. Just so I can stay on top of things and be on track in the social media world.
Both articles had different strategies to prove their claims. In ‘’Association between Facebook Dependence and Poor Sleep Quality’’ the method was to make the participants who were undergrad students complete the census to those who accepted. Questions were made to discuss the topic of sleep quality and social media.‘’A total of 21 questions were used to determine the seven components of sleep quality: duration, disturbance, latency, day dysfunction due to sleepiness, sleep efficiency, overall sleep quality and medication use. A global score of 6 or greater was defined as the cutoff to determine poor sleep quality as previously reported.’’(Isabella Wolniczak,José Alonso Cáceres-DelAguila ,Gabriela Palma-Ardiles,Karen J. Arroyo,Rodrigo Solís-Visscher ,Stephania Paredes-Yauri,Karina Mego-Aquije,Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz). The questionnaire can determine whether or not the participant is social media dependent. In ‘’Use of social media is associated with short sleep duration in a Dose –response manner in students aged 11 to 20 years’’ the experiment was a school based survey as well in which students take a survey with questions about social media use and sleep ‘’This study restricted its analyses to a random sample of 5403 students who completed FormA of the questionnaire, which included a measure of the use of social media. The survey used two split ballot modularised questionnaires – Forms A and B – to include as many topics as possible during a fixed class period’’. Participants were asked how often hours they typically Spent sharing or searching on blogs on social media, such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Both experiments had similar approaches towards the relationship between social media and sleep duration. However in both questionnaires there were different questions with the same topic. The questions related to the amount of time spent on social media and the amount of hours of sleep is the individual getting. Both results also prove that social media does relate to the amount of sleep duration. ‘’In this study, we have demonstrated a relationship between Facebook dependence and poor quality of sleep. Thus, Facebook dependent participant had about 1.3 times greater prevalence of poor sleep quality than the non-dependent group…’’(Isabella Wolniczak,José Alonso Cáceres-DelAguila ,Gabriela Palma-Ardiles,Karen J. Arroyo,Rodrigo Solís-Visscher,Stephania Paredes-Yauri,Karina Mego-Aquije,Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz). The authors state the positive relationship between social media and sleep duration.
Throughout the articles the authors state the importance of sleep and the effects of staying on social media for a long period of time. According to the article it states ‘’These include the direct displacement of sleep duration by social media, generally related to late-night use, which could shift the circadian rhythm towards a later mid-point of sleep and increased mental and physiological arousal before bedtime, which could delay sleep onset,’’(Hugues Sampasa-Kanyinga, Hayley A Hamilton, and Jean-Philippe Chaput). Social media is one of many reasons why teens don't get the amount of sleep they need in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. That relates mostly to the brain and body, which is key for motivation.Participants with social media dependence have more instability in the daytime than people without addiction. ‘’Results from this study indicated that both overall and night time-specific social media use were associated with poor sleep quality and that this association was independent of anxiety, depression and self-esteem..’’(Hugues Sampasa-Kanyinga, Hayley A Hamilton, Jean-Philippe Chaput). Both articles provide evidence through the experiments that were conducted that there is a positive correlation between the relationship of sleep duration and social media.
Social media has a huge impact on today's society, especially the young teens generation because of advanced and modern technology. Social media has many benefits as well if used correctly and not addictive. Connecting with others and learning new things.(Who cares) Although having friends online doesn't make an individual social but more anti social because social skills weren't taught. Sleep is an important topic to discuss especially with teens because sleep at a teenagers age is the most important. It is when the body and brain are developing. Sleep problems can be created from stress, depression, anxiety, obesity, poor academic performance and weakened mental health. Social media is an addiction which means users are always checking up on daily news or gossip. The excessive use of social media is becoming a social problem. Cutting down on the screen time should be a must because of the increased amount of negative consequences regarding mental and physical health. The amount of screentime for teens increases daily. Users should take a break and gain the mental and physical benefit of staying off social media platforms. Social media is an unhealthy cycle because people connect online instead of in person interactions. Less time on social media will help users to connect more face to face with individuals outside social media platforms. Keeping mindful of one's emotions and ideas, and being present in the moment instead of social media altering thoughts and emotions. Taking a break off social media means more time to learn about yourself and to also catch up on sleep.
